BASAS Conference 2022

BASAS will hold its annual conference at the University of Southampton from 31st March to 2nd April 2022. Due to current global conditions, we have decided to hold the conference online.

This year there is no specific theme for the conference – we invite proposals from across humanities, arts and social sciences for both panels and independent papers within the broadest reach of South Asian studies and including work on diasporas and the Indian Ocean world.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions for inclusion in the conference will be in two stages with two deadlines. In the first instance we extend a call for panel proposals. Successful panel proposals will then be advertised on the conference website and prospective delegates may apply to be included in a panel or to submit an individual paper. We will also be seeking proposals for pre-formed panels at stage two.

Deadline 1: 15th September 2021: Panel Proposals

This first deadline is for Panel proposals (up to 250 words). Please include your name, affiliation and contact details. Proposed panels may be defined broadly to appeal to a wide variety of panellists across disciplines or they may be focused onto coalescing a discrete group of scholars.

Please note that at this stage we only require panel ideas which, upon acceptance, will be advertised on the conference website by 1st October. This will allow prospective panellists to apply to be included in the panel by the second deadline.


Deadline 2: 15th November 2021: Individual papers and pre-formed panels

This is the deadline for individual paper proposals for inclusion in a panel or as free-standing papers that will be placed in panels at the discretion of the conference organisers. At this stage, proposals for pre-formed panels are also invited.  

Individual Papers should include the title of the paper, abstract (100-150 words), name, affiliation and contact details for the presenter. Please also indicate if you would like to be included in one of the advertised panels. 

Pre-formed panels are to be accompanied by individual paper abstracts for each of the proposed panel members (100-150 words). The panel organiser(s) should also arrange for a chair (who can be a panellist). Panels will last for 90 minutes with no more than 3 papers of 20 minutes in each slot. It is advisable that proposals allow sufficient time for the presentation of papers as well as discussion. Please provide full contact details (mailing and emailing addresses) for your paper and/or for each member of your panel. Please note: Incomplete panel proposals will not be accepted. Panel organisers are expected to have confirmed speakers and a chair prior to submission.  

The conference organisers may seek to add additional individual papers to accepted panels in discussion with panel organisers.
