BASAS Conference 2020
Cancellation of BASAS 2020 Conference
The Organising Committee for this year's BASAS Members' Conference, regret to advise that a decision to cancel the BASAS 2020 conference that was due to be held at the University of Southampton from the 1st to the 3rd of April has, and with great reluctance, been taken.
This has not been an easy decision to reach, but ultimately the Organising Committee are following the advice of the University of Southampton on the advisability of holding an international conference as the Coronavirus situation gets increasingly worse. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that COVID-19 coronavirus is a public health emergency of international concern, and the UK Chief Medical Officers have raised the risk to the UK from low to moderate.
The University of Southampton is still open but is also doing its utmost to ensure the wellbeing of staff, students and visitors and be responsible in helping to minimise the potential spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. The University of Southampton has therefore issued guidance that any non-essential international travel (to or from the University) should be considered very carefully, taking into account the potential risks of the country or area to be visited, and the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice. On Thursday 5 March the UK’s Chief Medical Officer for England announced that health officials are now moving into the ’delay’ phase of the government’s four-part plan to tackle the virus.
Given the rapidly changing situation, the Organising Committee has decided that the most prudent course of action is to cancel BASAS 2020 because the majority of attendees registered to date would be travelling internationally. Although this is regrettable and very disappointing, we are sure you’ll understand that this is in everyone’s best interests.
We shall reimburse all conference registration fees and also reimburse the BASAS membership fees should you wish to cancel your membership. This could take a little time to complete, so please bear with us: we shall do this as soon as possible.
We shall also work with you to produce appropriate paperwork to enable you to seek any refunds from your airlines and institutions for other outlays that you have made in relation to attending the conference.
Furthermore, the organising team of the BASAS 2021 conference in Edinburgh has agreed to consider the papers accepted for BASAS 2020 for inclusion in their programme. Please let us know if you would like us to forward your abstract to the Edinburgh team for review.
Should you have any queries in relation to any of the above please contact the Organising Committee at email@example.com in the first instance.
Finally, the University of Southampton will now be hosting the BASAS 2022 conference and we do hope to see you there in 2022.
With best wishes,
Priti Mishra (BASAS 2020 organiser and Secretary of BASAS)
Stephanie Jones (BASAS 2020 organiser)
Patricia Jeffery (Chair of BASAS)
