2017 Sri Lanka Graduate Conference, Cornell University, 13-14 October 2017

The 2017 Sri Lanka Graduate Conference will be held on October 13-14 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Hosted for the first time by Cornell’s South Asia Program, the conference is co-sponsored by the American Institute for Sri Lanka Studies. As in years prior, this workshop will bring together graduate students in both the final writing-up stage and pre-research/planning stages from a variety of disciplines and institutions. The graduate conference aims to enhance intellectual exchange on Sri Lanka, emphasize the production of empirical and non-sectarian knowledge, focus attention on recent potential transformation of key concepts, build a new cohort of researchers (and research) across disciplines and institutions, and strengthen relationships between American graduate students and local intellectual circles in Sri Lanka. We invite students from all disciplines to participate.
The University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Asian Studies with focus on gender. The position will begin August 20, 2018; Ph.D. or equivalent degree required at the time of hire.
The principal aim of the workshop is to train potential teachers of Exeter Foreign Language Centre’s new Hindi-Urdu programme, which will begin in October 2017, subject to sufficient enrolment. We are aiming to develop a curriculum capable of teaching Hindi and Urdu together, that is, one language in two scripts. This is unique in the UK, but successfully trialled in the USA, most eminently by UTA's Hindi-Urdu Flagship programme. As such, teachers of both or either language are very welcome to attend the workshop, which will include multiple sessions dedicated to developing teaching materials - text, videos, audio material, customised lesson plans, assessment tools and also mock teaching sessions. A range of classroom situations and student demographics will be taken into consideration, ranging from weekend classes for children in the community to university students. Actual sessions will depend on the stated interests of the participants, subject to the overall aims of the workshop.
Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or a tenured Associate Professor faculty position focused on law and legal institutions of Islam and/or Muslim societies in any time period.
The successful applicant for this position will be jointly appointed in the Stanford Law School and one of the following departments within the School of Humanities and Sciences: Anthropology, History, Political Science, or Sociology. The successful applicant will have teaching and advising responsibilities in both the Law School and the School of Humanities and Sciences and will also be expected to contribute to the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies’ curricular and outreach efforts.
On 11th July, 2013, we launched our BASAS Campaign. We announced our intention to establish an endowment fund, and we pledged to use our expertise to ensure BASAS continues to support workshops, language training grants, and other initiatives to sustain the study and research of the countries and people of South Asia.
