Research Fellow: Rethinking the Origins of the Indian Labour Diaspora

University of Leeds, School of History

This project, led by Professor Crispin Bates (University of Edinburgh) and Dr. Andrea Major (University of Leeds), sets out to complicate the assumption that Indian indentured labour migration around the Indian Ocean in the nineteenth and early twentieth century was nothing more than the cynical exploitation of a passive Indian labour force.

Grade: Grade 7

Salary: £31,342 to £37,394

Fixed term for 24 months from 1 March 2015

BASAS Campaign

On 11th July, 2013, we launched our BASAS Campaign. We announced our intention to establish an endowment fund, and we pledged to use our expertise to ensure BASAS continues to support workshops, language training grants, and other initiatives to sustain the study and research of the countries and people of South Asia.
